COMMUNITY PLANS

The Lighthouse Community Development Corporation is a non-profit community based organization serving the residents of southwest Mobile County, Alabama. Our purpose is to enhance and improve the quality of life for children, teens, seniors and leaders in our community. Based upon our strategic plan, we are focused on addressing three major issues:

1. Affordable Housing: HUD, USDA Home Renovation Assistance, Home Buyer Counseling
2. Education & Awareness: After School/Summer Youth Programs, Health Fair, Child Development
3. Community Outreach Referral: Family support of basic needs: utilities, food, clothing

We believe that improved education is the bedrock for everything we do. We understand that one of the basic tenants of life is to own your own home and to that end, increasing the number of families in affordable housing is vital.

To this end, we have created the “My Rural H.O.M.E.” (Home Ownership Made Easy) Program. This is a crucial initiative and purpose for the next 5 years.

OUR COMMUNITY

Our community is located in the southwest corner of Mobile County. The residents are from the predominately rural areas of Grand Bay, St. Elmo, Theodore, Irvington, Bayou la Batre, Coden and Tillman’s Corner.

The total population of these areas represents 26,414 residents and who are among the most impoverished of the county. These demographics support our community’s focus on children, teens, seniors and leaders:

- 34%+ of the residents live in single-parent households;
- 41 % have children 18 years of age and under;
- 23% of the households are composed of individuals 65+ years of age;
- The majority of residents are employed in low-wage/skilled occupations in the ship repair and seafood processing industries.

OUR VISION

Our shared vision is an economic and social transformation of our community resulting in an improved and sustainable quality of life. The community is our number one priority and is at the center of our vision.

Our second priority is our contributors, volunteers, board and staff. To complete the vision, we must look beyond ourselves, to other organizations, agencies, and institutions for partnerships to deliver services to our communities.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of our constituents by providing and coordinating services, programs and activities linked to children, teens, seniors and leaders.

These activities must encourage and provide residents with the leadership tools to transform themselves as agents of change.
